Open the GIF file that you saved onto your Procreate editing program. Select the draw option in the toolbar at the left of the screen. You will see two tabs; draw and go. If you already have an existing GIF on your computer that you’d like to keep on your iPad, you should open that one. If you’re trying out a drawing or any other type of image, simply highlight it and drag it over to the draw tab.

Tap the play icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to begin the animation. Notice that the video starts with only the basic shapes, but as you move through the clip, each frame will change to show more detailed drawings or animations. To start each frame of the animation, tap the red magic button to add the new frame to the private layer palette. To stop it, tap the stop button. You can add as many frames as you want, and they will all play at the same time.

To learn how to animate on Procreate, it helps to know how each frame of your animation works. The top-level layers are the basic frames that move with the clips in the timeline. Each of them is assigned a value, which tells the iPad what to make when it sees it. You can change these values by tapping on the appropriate frame and dragging it over to the timeline.

There are two other important layers within the timeline: the draw layer which controls what the user sees, and the color layer which colors everything in the background. By default, the draw layer is invisible, but you can customize it by selecting the color layer from the options palette. When you tap a frame on the timeline, it will switch to the color layer and the corresponding drawing will be shown in place of the original.

The last three layers are useful for editing and producing your animations. The rotate and flip options allow you to easily change the orientation of your clip, while the blend edit tools let you combine multiple images. To learn how to animate on Procreate, you need to understand how the different layers work together. It is a very involved process, but with a bit of practice and the right tutorial, you’ll be able to produce some amazing results.
