One helpful trick to keep in mind when learning how to animate on Procreate, is the way that layers work. The layer you are using to create your animation will be in one frame, but any other layer you add to that frame will be loaded in a new frame. For instance, if you click and drag on the layer underneath the one you are working on, it will automatically load in the next frame. It will go to the top of the layer and fade to the bottom as you do the dragging and dropping. This means that you’ll always know what happens in the background as you change it, allowing you to build a sequence of frames that you can repeat and build upon later.

Learning how to animate on Procreate means learning about the different ways that you can combine your images and use them to tell a story. There are two types of animations that you can make using the timeline feature – the first is a looping sequence of frames that repeats infinitely, and the second is an onion skin frame animation. The onion skin frame animation is the most basic, and uses up to 16 images and transitions between them. You can create this animation using the rectangle, circle, square, star, line, or any other shape that you place on the timeline, and then just flip your image over so that you are drawing in the new image and not just drawing over the ones you have in the foreground. This gives a smooth transition between images, and will slow down the pace of the animation as it goes on.
